Lorem Ipsum Generator

Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin text that's been used by printers and designers since the 1500s. The original source is a philosophical work called 'de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum' written by Roman statesman Cicero around 45 BC. Somewhere in the 16th century, a printer jumbled up a section of it to create type specimens. The phrase 'Lorem ipsum' is actually a chopped-up version of 'dolorem ipsum' which means 'pain itself' in Latin. Ironic, given how many designers it's saved from client nitpicking.

Nope. It started as Latin, but after 500 years of people copying, modifying, and scrambling it, the text is pure nonsense now. You'll spot real Latin words here and there—'sed' means 'but,' 'et' means 'and'—but string them together and you get gibberish. That's intentional. If it meant something, people would read it instead of looking at your design.

Go for it. The original Cicero text is over 2,000 years old—firmly public domain. The modern Lorem Ipsum versions have been freely used since printing began. No attribution needed, no licenses to worry about. Use it in client work, personal projects, whatever you need.

Match your mockup to reality. Building a landing page hero? That's usually 10-20 words max. Blog content area? Aim for 400-600 words to show realistic flow. Product cards need maybe 30-50 words each. The mistake most designers make is using too little text, then getting surprised when the real content breaks their layout.

Plenty. Hipster Ipsum fills your mockups with artisanal coffee references. Bacon Ipsum goes all-in on meat terminology. Samuel L. Ipsum... well, you can guess. Cupcake Ipsum is all pastries. They're fun for internal work, but clients sometimes find them unprofessional. Stick with classic Lorem Ipsum for anything going out the door.

Two problems. First, it draws attention to itself—people read English words automatically, even boring ones. Second, repeating the same short phrase creates weird visual patterns that don't represent how real text flows. Lorem Ipsum mimics the natural rhythm of language: varied word lengths, mixed sentence structures, organic distribution of characters.

Modern Lorem Ipsum? Not a thing. It's been chopped, shuffled, and randomized so many times that any original meaning is long gone. The Cicero passage it came from discussed pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain—pretty philosophical stuff. But what ends up in your mockups is just nice-looking nonsense, exactly as intended.

Credit goes to Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College. In the 1980s, he was curious about this weird text designers kept using, so he looked up some of the more unusual Latin words—specifically 'consectetur.' That led him straight to Cicero's 'de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum' and the mystery was solved.
